Kangol - Art Direction.
A fusion of British heritage, retro hip hop and future fashion.
Never afraid to make a statement.
A truly iconic brand, Kangol is described as ‘a cultural fashion fusion that takes the very best of British heritage and retro hip hop and mixes it with future fashion’. No surprise then that working with the Kangol UK team to shoot their seasonal collections, the brand was never afraid to make a statement.
With branded apparel supporting the famous headwear collections loved so much by no less than Samuel L Jackson, every photo shoot had to be planned, scheduled and styled right down to the smallest detail.
When headwear was ready, but apparel was not.
For this collection, our shoot brief was to deliver lashings of ‘Northern Grit’. A double decker bus, train, classic car restoration garage, football ground, and ‘greasy spoon’ café were sourced and with locations, models and team all in place, photographer David Woollacott and I were all good to go.
Then came the bombshell. The headwear was ready, but the apparel was not!!
If any brand would have the balls.
There was a decision to be made, we could cancel and reschedule, or we could suggest we go ahead and shoot anyway – without the apparel. As no brands other could feature, that meant going naked or bust.
We thought, well if any brand would have the balls, Kangol would.
One of the most talked about.
Sure enough, with only a second’s slight hesitation, they gave the go ahead for what was to become one of the most talked about Kangol shoots.
